The Ribbon Skirt

You see women wearing ribbon skirts at events like pow wows or cultural events. The skirts are sometimes rainbow in colour or maybe just a few colours. In Canada, National Ribbon Skirt Day was officially proclaimed into law in 2022 by the Canadian federal government. Saturday January 4, 2025, will be the next National Ribbon Skirt Day. National Ribbon Skirt Day originated in Saskatchewan in 2020 when a First Nations girl was denied wearing her ribbon skirt at school. The Ribbon Skirt was created by First Nations and the Metis Nation and it is common to see women wearing them today. If you want to know more ask an Elder about it but offer them something in return for their knowledge. They are designed for everybody to wear.
