What exactly is this test?

A pap smear is a test that involves your doctor and a nurse examining your cervix by using a speculum to view your cervix. They will then proceed to use either use a swab, or a special brush to collect a sample.

Does this testing hurt?

For first timers getting this test done, will always feel unusual and uncomfortable. However, it should not be painful. If there is any sensation, it would be mild and temporary. You can compare it to the slight feeling of menstrual cramping.

If anything feels entirely painful, it is important to speak to your doctor about the sensation and take a short break or stop the procedure entirely. Remember that you have a say about your health and well-being when it comes to the healthcare system.

How can I prepare for this test? What can I do to help me relax?

Before going into your appointment. It’s important to realize this test is for your safety of being aware of any cancers or other issues in your cervix.

You can do these things below to help relax during the test:

  • When your legs are in the stirrups, imagine your butt sinking into the bed to relax any lower muscles. Go into full frog leg position for optimal help in making the test finish quickly.
  • Breath through the process, wiggle your toes or fingers, and read posters on the wall.
  • Always communicate with your healthcare provider.
  • If the speculum feels too big, let your doctor know to switch to a smaller size.
  • Wear warm and comfy clothes to feel comfy before and after the appointment.
  • Take Advil or Tylenol before the appointment to help alleviate any cramping.
  • Know that you are in control of your body and helping it to always stay healthy when getting testing done.
