How to show support: Wear your jean jacket and something blue
Every year on June 6, people across Canada wear their blue jean jackets to raise awareness about a serious issue that doesn’t get talked about enough: the violence, trafficking, and exploitation of Indigenous men and boys.
This event is called Blue Jean Jacket Day, and it’s all about showing up, speaking out, and standing strong for Indigenous communities — especially for the young men, boys, and Two-Spirit+ people whose stories are too often ignored.
Why Blue Jean Jacket Day Matters
You might have heard of Red Dress Day (May 5), which honours Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Blue Jean Jacket Day was created to do something similar — but specifically for Indigenous men and boys who also experience high rates of violence, human trafficking, and being targeted or exploited.
The day started in Edmonton in 2023, thanks to two powerful advocates — Stephanie Harpe and April Eve — who wanted to make sure the voices of Indigenous men and boys weren’t left out of the conversation about justice and healing.
How You Can Get Involved
It’s simple but powerful:
- Wear a blue jean jacket (or anything blue!) on June 6
- Learn more about the issue and share what you learn
- Join or organize a local event like a walk, circle, or community gathering
- Use social media to spread awareness with hashtags like #BlueJeanJacketDay and #MMEIP
Why Your Voice Matters
When young people show up, people listen. By participating in Blue Jean Jacket Day, you’re helping shine a light on an issue that’s been kept in the dark.
You’re helping families feel seen, communities feel supported, and future generations feel safer.
You don’t have to be Indigenous to care. You just have to care about justice, equality, and truth.
Wearing a jean jacket on June 6 might seem like a small thing — but it can spark big conversations. It’s a symbol of respect, awareness, and commitment to creating a better, more inclusive future.
