This Earth Day, Indigenous youth are leading the charge in:

  • Enviromental stewardship.
  • Blending traditional knowledge with modern activism.
  • Protecting our planet.

In Canada, Indigenous youth are calling for "environmental reconciliation," urging governments and industries to take responsibility for historical and ongoing environmental harms. They emphasize the importance of including Indigenous perspectives in climate action to ensure a healthy environment for future generations.

Globally, the Global Indigenous Youth Summit on Climate Change 2024 provided a platform for Indigenous youth to share strategies and concerns about climate change. Participants from various countries discussed the impacts of climate change on their communities and emphasized the need for intergenerational collaboration to address environmental challenges.

These efforts are supported by initiatives like Canada's Indigenous Off-Diesel Initiative, which funds Indigenous communities to develop clean energy solutions.

In 2024, 10 remote Indigenous communities received up to $500,000 each to create Community Energy Plans, promoting sustainability and resilience.

As we celebrate Earth Day, let's recognize and support the vital contributions of Indigenous youth in shaping a sustainable future!
