So, what is Protocol? And why must I do it?
Protocol refers to the established customs, traditions, and guidelines, central to Indigenous cultures/communities, that shape how individuals engage with each other, particularly in cultural or ceremonial settings. It serves as a means of showing respect for:
- The Land
- Elders
- Communities
- Spiritual Practices
By following these Protocols, relationships are nurtured in a respectful and harmonious way, both within the community and with outsiders, including non-Indigenous people.
How is this done? What do I need for it?
Depending on what an Elder or Knowledge Keeper is seeking/needing the following is generally requested:
- Advice
- Wisdom
- Ceremony
You can expect to offer them:
- Tobacco
- Medicines
- Cloth
- Ribbon
- Or More
Always remember to be respectful, to listen and learn from your Elder or Knowledge Keeper, and to follow their teaching(s) accordingly.
Traditional Protocol is about respecting customs passed down through generations. It preserves cultural values, strengthens community bonds, and fosters respect and unity among all.
