What does it mean to have “Cultural Connections” support from the TAP program?
TAP has a specific policy that helps young adults to make cultural connections. The TAP program supports cultural access and pays for costs related to participating in your Indigenous culture.
How do I get support to access Cultural Connections?
The practitioner supporting you can help you arrange payments or get reimbursed for costs related to your Cultural Connections.
You can also ask your TAP practitioner to connect you with an Indigenous Liaison if you need help finding cultural traditions or Elders to talk to.
What does this funding/support cover? Cultural connections could be anything from:
- Regalia (traditional outfits and ceremonial items)
- Attending ceremonies
- Finding medicines
- Learning traditional practices (beading, cooking, drumming, dancing, hunting/fishing etc.)
- Providing protocol/gifts for knowledge shared
- Travel to Indigenous communities or land-based activities
- Visits with Elders & knowledge keepers
- And more... Ask your TAP practitioner how to find cultural activities you are interested in.
Discuss ideas with your TAP Practitioner or the TAP Indigenous Liaison’s of where you want to start. They can help with any barriers that might make it hard for you to access cultural connections.
Things you could consider asking your practitioner are:
- Where your family of origin is from
- Ways to learn about Indigenous history
- Ways to get involved in Indigenous community events
- Who you can connect with for cultural knowledge
- Other questions for cultural information you are looking for
Who do I talk to about this?
- Current TAP clients can access Indigenous Liaison’s through their TAP practitioner via email inquiry for supports, questions, etc.
- General inquiries can be submitted via general TAP email: [email protected]
